ROSE CARR was a 19th century local character of some notoriety.
Rose spent her youth in domestic service but became a carrier - normally a man's job, by her early twenties.
By 1872, Rose was running a stable and carriers business in Hornsea, and she was renowned for her ability to control a coach and four which was no mean feat for a woman. Rose was enormously strong and could carry two 16 stone sacks of corn.
Many people have speculated whether she was a woman at all!
John Markham's book: "Rose Carr - A remarkable Homsea Character" tells her story and you can buy it in the museum shop.
