August 2001 : Pottery reunion

REUNION FOR POTTERY BUST : A very special reunion took place at Hornsea Museum on Monday August 20th between the designer and maker of a unique item of Hornsea Pottery. The 'Bust of a Young Girl' was made back in 1965 and was the largest piece of pottery produced by the Hornsea factory. In hindsight it was seen as being ahead of its time and the production run was very small. The photograph shows the designer of the bust, John Clappison (right) and the original model maker Alan Luckham discussing their 36 year old creation.

The bust was originally owned by Jack Aspinall who was the post-master in the Post Office in Newbegin, Hornsea. During the 1960s he let the Hornsea Pottery Company use the display case near the counter in exchange for the contents. The contents were changed on a regular basis and so he consequently built up quite a collection. Jack's Widow, Gwen, died at the end of last year, leaving the collection to their daughter who kindly donated it to Hornsea Museum..

The head of the bust was modelled in such a way as to act as a holder for an ash tray, plant pot or diffused light fitting or as a free standing model. Unfortunately the present lampshade is not the original one and the Museum would like to hear from anyone who may know the exact dimensions of the original shade by telephoning (01964) 533443 or 533430.
